Below are some opportunities to get involved with local, sustainable activities which could help change your life for the better. Contact us for further information.
1. We have a number of allotmenteers on our site at the moment and they have all become friends and have a good social life with each other. They have recently held a BBQ and last Sunday they had a bonfire night. Many of them had never grown their own food before. As council allotments have a long waiting list this would be a good opportunity for anybody that was interested in growing their own produce to have a go. If you can help or know who I might be able to get in touch with I could then send you the price details. Denise (dmoses@harrisonhomescumbria.co.uk).
2. A group of local people are looking to form a self-managed allotment society, based in Currock Carlisle, with a view to leasing and regenerating derelict allotment land just off. The plan is to have the land ready for this Summer's growing season, but will depend on how fast the group can be put together and any other time-factors such as agreeing lease arrangements. There will be between 10-20 plots available, but with scope to expand if the group is a success. Financial commitment is to be decided, but will be controlled by the group. A type of Community Supported Agriculture scheme that aims to increase the link between local people, farmers and food producers and helps deliver high quality, local and sustainably produced food at a price which is fair to members and producers. The new format takes into account lessons we’ve learnt through the pilot and broadens the offer so that you can be a part of this in different ways. It’s also got flexibility and a wider range of foods on offer.
Please take a look and, regardless of whether you were in the pilot stage, get in touch if you want to take up any of the local food offers.
