Great Big Green Week

Here you will find all about Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week (18th-26th September 2021).

What an amazing day we had at Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week event in town last Saturday – a huge than you to everyone that was involved or came along on the day.

Please enjoy these pictures from the day, with thanks to SC volunteer Hazel for this cracking selection of pictures.

During our Great Big Green Week event we had a questionnaire about the general public’s feelings about the climate crisis, please find the answers we gathered in this document!

One of Sustainable Carlisle’s stalls at Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week last Saturday was a protest placard drop in workshop.

We were very inspired by all the amazing children and young people who came along – from very little ones who love nature, through to teens who want to have their voice heard, through to young people already making waves in climate activism in Cumbria.

Here’s a selection of some of the placards that were created. Amazing what a bit of paint and cardboard can do when matched with the passion of this generation!

To kick off Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week, Sustainable Carlisle are organising a big event on Saturday 18th September. Happening in the city centre, between 10-2, a variety of local organisations and artists will be welcoming everyone to join us for a fantastic day of engaging information, hands on workshops, and creativity about tackling the climate crisis.

All are welcome to come along to learn and experience how we can tackle the climate crisis within our community.

We have confirmed as stall holders…

Sustainable Carlisle

Carlisle One World Centre

David Simmons

Rosie Galloway-Smith

Cumbria Organic Farmers and Gardeners

We will also be joined by Carlisle Community Cycle Hub on 18th September for the opening event of Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week. They will be running one of their amazing bike check and fix pop ups.

Carlisle Community Cycle Hub bike mechanics will spend up to 30 minutes per person working on your bike(s) to do a FREE safety check to ensure your cycle is safe to ride as well as minor repairs and adjustments.

Parts and labour for this event are funded by Cycling UK. To contribute towards the Hub’s annual running costs we would gratefully appreciate a nominal donation.

Booking your slot is essential so go to www.carlislecyclehub.org/book-online to grab your slot and get your bike ready for the change of the seasons!

One of Sustainable Carlisle’s stalls at the opening event of Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week will be a drop in DIY protest placard workshop. We will have all the materials and inspiration to get you making an eye catching placard for all you budding activists out there – ready for your next climate action event or to display in your window at home.

One of the stalls at Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week opening event on 18th Sep will be addressing the theme of fast fashion. Local artist Rosie Galloway-Smith will be using her stall to present one of her beautiful yet thought provoking installation pieces as well as offering free textiles repairs on the day.

A big thank you to Studio Walden for creating these wonderful workshop social media graphics.

The opening event of Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week on Saturday 18th is being supported by Carlisle City Council. The event will be taking place in the bustling pedestrianised area of the city centre, with the council providing all of the stalls and tables to help make this celebration of community action and public engagement a possibility.

Here’s another great way to get involved with Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week! On Sunday 19th September (11-4) Denton Holme Community Garden will be having a day on their allotment which donates to a local food bank.

New volunteers are always welcome so pop down for a day of gardening and community. 🙂

Studio Walden is IN! This local self started business and friend of Sustainable Carlisle (the designer that produced our beautiful logo) is taking part in Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week to make it a bigger and better green week for our city and community.

We have some great people and organisations (who we will also be featuring on our social media) taking part in our Saturday 18th opening event but it is the others doing, creating, talking about climate action throughout the whole week that will make our Great Big Green Week…great!

If you and your business or organisation want to get involved with Carlisle’s Great Big Green Week through the 18th – 26th September, we at Sustainable Carlisle would love to chat and advise on what sort of event or community action can be taken! Drop Katie an email at katie@sustainablecarlisle.org.

Sustainable Carlisle are looking for all sorts of creative people / collectives to get involved with the Great Big Green Week, a national week that celebrates action on the climate crisis which runs from the 18th – 26th September.

On Saturday 18th we still have some spaces for stall holders (to run a drop in workshop, exhibit some art, host interactive art) or if you prefer to be part of the ‘arts tent’ which will run a drop in protest placard workshop. This is as part of a big event in the town centre on Saturday 18th September to celebrate the start of the national Great Big Green Week, which will also feature other local ‘green’ organisations.

If you would like to do something to celebrate the Great Big Green Week in your own way on another day, please do let us know and we can add it to our timetable of events in Carlisle and will promote it along with the rest of the happenings.

All ideas and creative practises are very welcome (the more variety the better!) as long as it addresses the climate crisis and/or the nature & the environment.

To find out more please contact Katie at… katie@sustainablecarlisle.org

Make sure you put Saturday 18th September in your diary as we are planning something amazing, creative and community focused to kick start the Great Big Green Week here in Carlisle.
