Community organising is a bottom-up approach to engaging people in their communities, by supporting them to act on the issues that matter to them. A community organiser works in the community with local residents, rather than professionals or development workers, supporting local people to take action on the issues in their area that they identify as being important.
This process leads to incredibly diverse and locally relevant projects or actions. Anything from community spaces, arts projects, growing, sharing, or people standing up and getting involved in local decision making processes.
Here at Sustainable Carlisle we have had the opportunity to take on a community organiser for 18 months, to work on 2 projects aimed at building more sustainable local networks and communities.
