Sustainable Carlisle run a Freestall at the Carlisle Farmers Market which takes place on the first Saturday of every month within the beautiful grounds of Carlisle Cathedral.
No payment or donation is exchanged for preloved goods being passed on from one to another.
Our Freestall is one of many similar experimental projects replicated in many towns and cities across the land as an exercise to reduce waste, challenge consumerist ways of living and as a way to create conversation with the general public.
One visitor to the Stall, on finding a perfect pair of Chelsea Boots, gleefully exclaimed, “I’m gonna leave the stall cooler than when I arrived!”
For more information about embodying the spirit of the freestall check out our festive sustainability page !

We are made of a network of people who donate their time and work hard to keep our projects such as the Freestall flourishing, so you can hear from these people first hand to shout out the amazing work that they do and why they do it.
Below is a gallery of pictures from when the stall came to the wonderful Plant, Food and Wellbeing Fair in Bitts Park (May 2021), where our stall was a great success as we took a plant-y spin to things! We spoke to so many friendly people about gardening / growing your own food, sustainability and COP 26 from a wide demographic of our city…with lots of merry exclamations about how we were giving away things for free!
