This is a peatland close to Carlisle that was commercially extracted for peat compost for the horticultural industry until 2002. You’ll hear about how bogs are formed, what lives there, and we’ll take a peat core to tell us more. We’ll think about man’s use of peat throughout history and the role of peat in the long-term storage of carbon from the atmosphere. Natural England has been gradually restoring the peatland using various techniques by hand and with diggers, and in the afternoon we will plant a new area with cotton grasses.
Timing: 10am till 3pm, Sat 9th April
